Chechnya and its People Essay examples -- War Europe Essays
Chechnya and its People The progressing common war between the semi-self-ruling republic of Chechnya and Russia has significantly grabbed the eye of the world â⬠a world that sees the contention fundamentally through the mutilated focal point of Russian purposeful publicity, and the negating pictures of Chechen enduring on the free media. On the off chance that the West appears to be unbiased or even not interested in the Chechen clash, it is on the grounds that there is small comprehension of this individuals, of their battle, or of the huge complexities of the more noteworthy North Caucasian area where the Chechens are a section. This absence of comprehension reaches out to the foggy Western view of the job of Islam in Chechen society. The expansive speculations that have been made by those in the media, by help associations, by the Russians, by Islamic gatherings, and by those in the American government are totally politicized distortions which look to carry the center of the contention to its most mi nimized shared variable. A considerable lot of the cases spin around Islam; yet, scarcely any trouble to consider the more noteworthy character of Chechen society, or of the more extensive verifiable extent of progress that Islam has followed in Chechnya. Regularly, Islam has changed in light of a Russian upgrade, however a considerable lot of the Russian activities and reasons in this contention are very much reported. This examination expects to break down the Chechen job in the common war â⬠and the job of Islam in Chechnya â⬠instead of the Russian job, which has been investigated many occasions over. Visions Of Reforms And Reformation - 1488 Words
Aidan Garfield Professor Lee POLS 1002 26 March 2017 Visions of Reforms and Reformation Compare and contrast Wollstonecraftââ¬â¢s and Marxââ¬â¢s thoughts on the following questions. (a) What does progress consist in? (b) How does progress occur? (c) Where is progress headed? Mary Wollstonecraft and Karl Marx both viewed progress as overcoming an reclaiming a true sense of humanity, but defined that humanity, the means of achieving that humanity, and their general worldview in different ways. Wollstonecraft sought progress by reforming private life virtues through voluntary education and action. This is an instance in which political or philosophical timing is important. Wollstonecraft (1999, chap. 1) described reason as a chief component of womenââ¬â¢s improvement in direct opposition to the then-popular temperance movement and claimed that the popular adherents of temperance and their ââ¬Å"use of soft phrases, susceptibility of heart, delicacy of sentiment, and refinement of tasteâ⬠were contributing to the ir own oppression, similar to the Marx worker contributing to his own alienation. Karl Marx wrote on the systemic issues facing workers and the proletariat in his Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts 1844. Marx (1993, chap. 9) described the unjust exploitation of workers in almost biblical terms, comparing alienation to the work of the Devil and said it would cause a variety of ailments not limited to deformity, denial, misery, unhappiness, a lack of free mental and physical energy, and would mortify the workerââ¬â¢s flesh and ruin his mind. Wollstonecraft and Marx agree on the concept that progress consisted in equality, reason, and some sort of action, but differed on the ways of facilitating progress and differed on who would enjoy said progress. Wollstonecraft thought that all individuals should enjoy the benefits of true moral equality and enlightenment, while Marx wished to punish the ruling class forShow MoreRelatedThe Inevitability Of The Reformation1689 Words à |à 7 PagesThe Inevitability of the Reformation The Reformation is largely attributed to Martin Luther. Cases Of Innocent Capital Punishment Essay Example For Students
Cases Of Innocent Capital Punishment Essay Capital PunishmentHe who sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for inthe image of God was man created.(Genesis 9:6) Anyone who by violence causesa death must be put to death.(Exodus 21:12) But should any person dare tokill another with deliberate planning, you will take that person even from myaltar to be put to death.(Exodus 21:14)Capital Punishment can be described as a the punishment of death for avery bad or heinous crime like murder. Not all states have got capitalpunishment, otherwise known as the Death Penalty. The states which do not havethis type of punishment are Alaska, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine,Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, WestVirginia, and Wisconsin. The remaining states do have some form of capitalpunishment ranging from hanging, firing squad, electrocution, gas chamber, andlethal injection. If somebody killed someone they would not automatically get the deathpenalty, there are several circumstances that a judge, jury, and prosecutionermust look at to see how bad the crime was. In some states if you kidnap someone, and do heinous things to them, you could still be eligible for the death penalty. Each state which carries a death sentence has got their own requirements that aperson must meet to decide whether they get life in prison, or the sentence ofdeath. Below is each state which carries a death sentence and the requirementsthat a person must meet and be convicted of in order to receive the deathsentence. In Alabama in order to receive the death penalty you must murder duringa kidnapping, robbery, rape, sodomy, burglary, sexual assault, or arson. Also, someone would get the death penalty if they murdered a peace officer, correctional officer, public official, or murder under a life sentence. Theyremany more but they are kind of useless to my paper. In the state of Arizona, the only way you could receive the death penalty was if you committed firstdegree murder and had one of ten aggravating factors associated with themurder. In Arkansas you must kill someone with arson, kill a law enforcementofficer on purpose, a teacher or school worker, kill a prison worker, a jailattendant, correctional worker, or someone who is in the military. Also if youare a hit man, otherwise known as contract murder. In California you mustcommit treason, which are acts to try to overthrow the government, homicide by aprisoner serving a life term, train wrecking, and lastly perjury causingexecution. For Colorado, it is almost the same as Arkansas but it also includesreferees and judges. In Connecticut murder of a public safety or correctionalofficer, murder for pecuniary gain; murder in the case of a felony; murder by adefendant with a previous conviction for intentional murder; murder while undera life sentence; murder during kidnapping; illegal sale of cocaine, methadone,or heroin to a person who dies from using these drugs; murder during first-degree sexual assault; multiple murders; the defendant committed the offense(s)with an assault weapon.(AOL1) For the state of Delaware murder withaggravating circumstances, including murder of a child victim fourteen years ofage or younger by an individual who was atleast four years older than thevictim,(AOL1) and the same like killing police officers or other peace people. In Florida you must commit felony murder; first-degree murder; sexual batteryon a child under age twelve; destructive devices which result in death, andcapital drug trafficking.(AOL1) In Georgia its about the same with theexception of hijacking an airplane when someone dies. For the state ofIllinois, if you commit first degree murder with atleast only one of fourteenaggravating circumstances, you will be sentenced to death. It seems hardest toget the death penalty in Indiana because you must murder someone and include allfourteen aggravating circumstances. Kansas is roughly the same as in Coloradobut if you killed two people in the same incident you will most likely get thedeath penalty also. In Kentucky, you could possibly get the death penaltywithout even killing someone if you kidnap someone and there is an aggravatingfactor, also if you murder with only one aggravating factor. In Louisiana, allyou have to do is murder someone or commit treason. In Maryland, commit firstdegree mur der, either premeditated or during the commission of a felony.(AOL1)Mississippis death penalty is exactly like this: capital murder includesmurder of a police officer or correctional guard, murder under life sentence, murder by bomb or explosive, contract murder murder committed during specificfelonies which include (rape, burglary, unnatural intercourse with a child, andnonconsentual unnatural intercourse); and murder of an elected official. Capitalrape in Mississippi is defined as forcible rape of a child under fourteen yearsof age by a person eighteen or older.(AOL1) Missouri just says that you mustcommit first degree murder. In Montana you must kill someone on purpose, kidnapa person and they die or someone trying to help them dies, try to break someoneout of prison who has killed someone already. For Nebraska, just kill someoneon purpose. In Nevada you have to kill someone with atleast nine aggravatingfactors. New Hampshire is about the same as Colorado. In New Jersey, if youkil l someone or know someone is going to be killed, also contract murder. InNew Mexico, kill someone or commit murder with felony circumstances. For NorthCarolina, just commit first degree felony murder. Ohio states aggravatedmurder, including assassination; contract murder; murder during escape; murderwhile in a correctional facility; murder after conviction for a prior purposefulkilling or prior attempted murder; murder of a peace officer; murder arisingfrom specific felonies(rape, kidnapping, arson, robbery, burglary); murder of awitness to prevent testimony in a criminal proceeding or in retaliation.(AOL1)Oklahoma is the same except it adds that murder when the victim is a child whohas been maimed, tortured, or injured. Oregon says that all you have to do iscommit aggravated murder. In Pennsylvania and South Carolina just commit murderand have an aggravating circumstance. In South Dakota, you would get the deathpenalty if you committed first degree murder or kidnapped someone and d idpermanent physical injury to them. In Tennessee you would get the deathsentence if you killed someone while you were committing a felony. Texas whichexecutes the most people has a whole list of offenses which someone could getthe death penalty for they are murder of a public safety officer, fireman, orcorrectional employee; murder during the commission of specified felonies likekidnapping, burglary, robbery, aggravated rape, or arson; murder forremuneration means gain, multiple murders, murder during prison escape, murderby a Stateprison inmate who is serving a life sentence for any of five offenses;murder of an individual under six years of age.(AOL1) In Utah, if youcommitted murder or you were a prisoner and committed aggravated assault whileunder a life sentence. Virginia has got capital punishment for crimes likemurdering someone while involved in felonies like abduction, armed robbery, rape, and forcible sodomy, also for contract murder, murder of a cop or killingsomeone under twelve years of age. In Washington you get the death penalty ifyou commit premeditated murder. In Wyoming you get the punishment of death ifyou commit premeditated murder; felony murder in the perpetration attempts ofsexual assaults, arson, robbery, burglary escape, resisting arrest, kidnapping,or abuse of a child under sixteen years of age.(AOL1)There are many different forms of capital punishment used todaythroughout the United States, they are hanging, firing squad, electrocution, gaschamber, and a lethal injection. When someone is hanged today they are killedexecution style by strangling or snapping the neck by a suspended noose. Whensomeone is executed in front of a firing squad, they are put attached to a polein the ground and expert shooters shoot at him and aim to explode his heart. .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada , .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .postImageUrl , .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada , .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:hover , .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:visited , .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:active { border:0!important; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:active , .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue2639ed88ea978aa668f3386ca597ada:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: ADOBE MAGAZINE EssayWhen someone is sentenced to die in the electric chair, they have to wear aleather mask to cover their face not because they arent to see what is going tohappen to them but to keep their eyeballs from popping across the room. Pop Art The birth of Pop art (short for Popular art) emerged in England between the years of 1950 and 1960, but heightened to its full potential in New York. Pop art was a form of rebellion against Abstract Expressionism. Pop artists felt that Abstract Expressionism was an elite art, to which only a tiny class, mainly of painters and poets, could respond (30 Compton). Pop artists also considered them pretentious and over-intense and at the same time, only selling to the greedy middle class. So, in order for the artists who were against Abstract Expressionism to dissent from that pretentious position they created Pop art. Pop art is the imagery of popular culture drawn from the cinema, television, advertising, comics and packaging to express abstract formal relationships. Furthermore, Pop artists also duplicated common mass production images such as beer bottles, soup cans, comic strips and road signs in paintings, collages, and sculptures. Others actually incorporated the objects themselves into their paintings and sculptures, and often times modifying them as well. Materials of modern technology, such as plastic, urethane foam, and acrylic paint, were also included in some of their art works. Critics did not easily accept this new and bizarre style of art. In fact, the politically engaged critics complained that Pop art is the art of passive acceptance and that the subject matters are wild and impassioned, and therefore in itself a satire on American life. (30 Compton) However, that is rarely the case, the artists may be radical but they never intend to satirize the American life. Their only purpose is to stress the importance of an everyday object and their instant recognizable image and for everyone to be able to relate to it Arts Essays

How To Make Your Work With A Supervisor Effective
How To Make Your Work With A Supervisor Effective How To Choose The Right Supervisor And To Work With Your Tutor Right? When you start working with your supervisor on your dissertation, you may expect that this will be the same student-tutor type of relationship. This is the one that you got used to and you most likely feel comfortable with. But you need to understand that working on a dissertation required more than that. We will disclose in this article that you need to pay attention to the interpersonal skills as well. Your collaboration will require mutual understanding and clarity in order to make your work together effectively. Choosing the right tutor For undergraduates and Masterââ¬â¢s students universities usually assign supervisors in advance. This choice is affected by the topic you offer and the field of study, of course. But in fact, the process of choosing the right supervisor can be really challenging for the student. This is one of the most important aspects that will affect all further work on your dissertation. You work with a tutor on your paper will shape and direct your thoughts, approaches, and solutions for the selected topic. So you need to be considering in approving collaboration with one or another supervisor. We have prepared questions you should ask yourself before you will make a choice. This will help you to start good professional relationships with the right purpose. Is your supervisor familiar with your sub-field and topic? You may consider this question weird, but in fact, it is very reasonable. Students sometimes consider that if their supervisor is well-aware of the general field you are working in, he/she will be an expert in your sub-field as well. But in fact, the wider knowledge does not always mean that the person can understand right your topic in the narrower field. Also, you cannot expect that your supervisor has read all the books, articles and works of other scholars in order to get an understanding of the topic (as you might do). Most experienced supervisors understand this and refuse to work with some graduates simply because they realize they have a lack of expertise in the particular sub-field. While some relatively young academics may mistakenly consider that they will be able to help you with your work, even if they do not have enough depth of knowledge. In this case, you need to check the suitability of this person to your dissertation by yourself. Does he/she share your choice of direction? It is okay that you and your supervisor may have minor disagreements during your work. Moreover, some of them may be really important as soon as they are supported by constructive arguments. But you also need to remember that there are approaches in one field that can be completely opposite. So do your best to pick the supervisor who will share the same assumptions as you, instead of starting working with a person who obviously has completely different views in your topic. Does he/she share your working patterns and expectations? By the moment you start writing your dissertation you probably already know what kind of supervisor you need for the productive continuation of your work. If you know that you may procrastinate sometimes and do simple things too slowly, you may look for the person who will be strict enough to stimulate your work and following deadlines. Or maybe you are motivated enough to work constantly and you do not want too much interruption into your writing process. Then you may look for the tutor who will be ready to revise your chapters when you ask them, no sooner or later, providing you with detailed and constructive comments. Do you get the decent level of attention to your work with quality recommendations and good criticism? Does the selected supervisor have enough influence on you to motivate, stimulate or direct you? How many students are working with him/her right now? Some supervisors can be really popular so many students request working with them. But eventually, this may have a bad impact as this can reduce the quality of work with each student. Moreover, in this case, the supervisor needs to switch between topics too often that may cause confusions as well. But another side of the coin is not good as well. If nobody wants to work with a particular person, they could have reasons for that. Working process with your supervisor You and your supervisor need to understand that you are now starting the working relationship, which requires mutual understanding, sharing professional views and so on. The form of the relationships you will have with your supervisor will depend on the subject you are working in, but most of all it will be affected by the working patterns that you will choose. Anyway, you need to read and take into consideration our following recommendations. Work with your supervisor, not for him Being a student you probably got used to the particular model of behavior and communication with your tutors. During modules, you receive the particular tasks that you need complete in a particular way to satisfy the teacherââ¬â¢s requirements. This model also works during passing the exams when you express thoughts that your professor wants to her. And when you start working on with your tutor on your dissertation you may feel like fulfilling his/her requests as well. Despite the fact that your paper should meet the particular requirements specified by your department, still, you should not be oriented at satisfying your supervisor though. You need to reconsider your attitude and think of your supervisor more like teammate rather than the examiner. You are working together on the same goal and you are the author of the research in the first place. Just like with teamwork, you need to consider the person you are in collaboration right now. You need to do what you are asked for and do not miss deadlines and tasks. Provide the chapter, draft or the piece of research when you promised to your supervisor in order to keep on the same track and gradually fulfill your paper. But you also need to keep in mind another significant aspect of the working in the team: being clear in what you want to get from your teammate. You can give your supervisor a first draft in order to check up whether you have chosen the right direction. But your supervisor may consider that this is the nearly completed part of the paper and it may cause serious confusion. So as soon as you ask for help, feedback, recommendation, make sure that you have explained on what stage you are now and of what ââ¬Å"flawsâ⬠of your current version of dissertation you are aware of. Engage your supervisor at the first stages of work Most supervisors realize the importance of their control over the early stages of dissertation writing. That is why they often insist on often meetings during this period. But sometimes supervisors may be ââ¬Å"hands-offâ⬠and do not insist on this way of collaboration. That is the situation when you need to control this aspect by yourself. Involve your tutor in the process of planning as this stage can affect all further work. Defining all the important aspects and directions will guide you in your work on the dissertation and prevent the majority of common mistakes. Moreover, there will be fewer risks that your dissertation will require serious making over. You can get a bunch of useful info from your supervisor, for instance, what books, articles and works to read or what researches to study. With this approach in the early stages, you will get receiving the required theoretical and practical skills that will make your dissertation creation productive. Arrange often meetings with your supervisor to check the process stage by stage Nothing in the educational process can be more disappointing than bringing to your supervisor 200 pages of your work and receive the comment that you need to start over because your starting point was wrong. That is why you need to develop a habit to arrange meetings with your tutor as often as possible to check every chapter and the stage of production. Discuss the next steps of your plan and their relevance to the dissertation in general. This will prevent you from being stuck on the same level and you will constantly receive guidelines of what you need to study more to move forward. Do not think that your supervisor expects only completed work from you. Sure thing, you have to cover minor aspects like grammar check and proper formatting by yourself. But this is not your regular tutor. Your supervisor needs to see your progress and trace it. If you will provide a chapter that looks good and contain no grammar mistakes, you will let your supervisor see the actual content and base his/her feedback on it. Conduct productive disagreements You and your supervisor are different people and it is normal if you will have minor disagreements considering the working on your dissertation. He/she does not have to agree with you on any level. But as soon as you have any issues, turn them to the advantageous path. Discuss why your supervisor suggests a different approach or criticize your thoughts. Do not be afraid of such situations. Of course, it may be daunting when you hear that you might be wrong in the thing that you pay so much time for. But on the other hand, consider this as an opportunity to grow as well as the chance to train your communication skills when you need to defend your views. Do not be afraid to change the supervisor There are rare cases when undergraduates cannot make their work with the supervisor productive. The reasons can vary. In some situations you can realize too late that your supervisor does not want to support your ideas, making you write an entirely different paper. Or you may find their comments impenetrable and demoralizing. Or your supervisor does not pay attention to your meeting request and you cannot get in touch with him/her for weeks. Anyway, you can eventually decide that you need to switch the tutor and start working with another supervisor. This is possible and you need to address your request to the head of the department. Do not be afraid to do so as this is your work in the first place and only you are responsible for it.

Increasing Atomic Number Doesnt Always Increase Mass
Increasing Atomic Number Doesnt Always Increase Mass Since atomic number is the number of protons in anà atomà and atomic mass is the mass of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom, it seems intuitively obvious that increasing the number of protons would increase the atomic mass. However, if you look at the atomic masses on a periodic table, you will see that cobalt (atomic No. 27) is more massive than nickel (atomic No. 28). Uranium (No. 92) is more massive than neptunium (No.93). Different periodic tables even list different numbers for atomic masses. Whats up with that, anyway? Read on for a quick explanation. Neutrons and Protons Not Equal The reason increasing atomic number doesnt always equate to increasing mass is because many atoms dont have the same number of neutrons and protons. In other words, several isotopes of an element may exist. Size Matters If a sizeable portion of an element of lower atomic number exists in the form of heavy isotopes, then the mass of that element may (overall) be heavier than that of the next element. If there were no isotopes and all elements had a number of neutrons equal to the number of protons, then atomic mass would be approximately twice the atomic number. (This is only an approximation because protons and neutrons dont have exactly the same mass, butà the mass of electrons is so small that it is negligible.) Different periodic tables give differing atomic masses because the percentages of isotopes of an element may be considered changed from one publication to another.

MILITARY PAY SYSTEMS - Research Proposal Example DATA ANALYSIS AND REPORT l. APPENDICES AND REFERENCES Time schedule Resources needed Personnel Assurances /Clearances Questionnaire/ survey/interview A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF MILITARY PAY SYSTEMS a. INTRODUCTION The military is a major arm of the government; it is an organization that is endowed with the sole and sensitive function of providing internal and external security of the country. A vital area of research under the military pay system would be general rather than specific. The research is therefore concerned with addressing the military pay in a diverse perspective: the structural make up of the system; how the structure operates; accountability; and responsibility of the system. Also, all the issues that impact the overall system will be addressed by the research undertaking; under issues, gender and military will be addressed, military and crime, recruitment in the military and their salary schemes including other relevant issues. It is these kinds of motivations and u rge to find out that have propelled the urge to find out about the military pay system. This study will lead to the development of strategies to help deal with the challenges depicted (Neuman 2009). This is to ensure that the future benefits realized from the system are maximized for the future generations. Research on Military pay is also because there is tremendous transformation in the socio-economic sector. The socio-economic changes have severely affected the stakeholders in the military by causing severe stress due to the culture and the social make up of the society. PROBLEM STATEMENT Military officers are an important asset to any country hence must be accorded all the assistance they need in order to perform their work efficiently. The research is hence seeks to find out why there is never enough compensation to the military for the work they do and the risk they expose themselves to. The relevant expected risks shall be identified and advocacy plus awareness be shouted to the government that they will never be in the position to provide enough compensation for the risks that the military are engaged (Neuman 2009). Those seeking to join the forces will also have enough knowledge and facts to make a basis before deciding to join the forces or not. c. RESEARCH RATIONALE The problem is that the compensation is never enough and the reason therefore has a fundamenta l task of finding why this is so; the major reasons behind this fact. This research is also towards finding out about the nature and magnitude of the risks and tries proposing a compensation that if given to the service men would be closer to substituting the risks that they face in the course of discharging their duties (Financial Friendly fire 2006). The research requires a dissection into the roles of the study and can only be determined using qualitative approach of data collection and analysis; this will be done through collection of information from a varied group of persons in the military identified through random selection, topics to be discussed with them is as well got randomly. Essay About Family: A Portrait of a Sister :: Personal Narrative essay about my family
A Portrait of a Sister Sitting at my desk, trying to organize all my server sales reports from work, photo-copied papers, coupons, gift-certificates and important receipts, I start laughing to myself at how much I am like my sister. The sound of her soft voice echoes through my mind, ââ¬Å" Lee, photo-copy all these documents, and donââ¬â¢t forget to keep your receipts.â⬠That is my sisterââ¬â¢s fetish; anything important must be photocopied, unless a sin. Itââ¬â¢s those little things she says and does that I have always teased her about that I find myself doing now. I glance up looking on my desk for the FAFSA document, and the picture of my sister and me driving the cardboard school bus catches my eye. January 1988 Sitting in my living room, my grandma and mom were taking down the Christmas decorations, and putting them in cardboard boxes. My sister always had my grandmaââ¬â¢s creativity, which they both passed on to me. My sister turned to me and said, ââ¬Å" I have a fun project for us, Lee.â⬠Rolling my eyes and looking back over my shoulder, to my sister, I said, ââ¬Å"Oh, no way. Last time you had a fun project I ended up having my hands tied behind my back.â⬠She informed me that it would be really fun, she swore. The whole week we secretly stashed cardboard boxes in the closet in our room, and then we cut out all different shapes. The shapes together were going to make up a school bus. Since my mom is a schoolteacher we stole her paint, and later that week we painted the cardboard yellow. Two weeks later, we presented our project to my mom and grandma at dinner. We were so proud of ourselves. Looking back now, I remember that the school bus was our favorite toy for that week. I also remember that the following week my sister had a new ââ¬Å"projectâ⬠. May 1996 My first week of JV Kickline tryouts. I come home and say, ââ¬Å"We have a mission on our hands.â⬠I tell her it is now time to make me the next member of the Bethpage JV Kickline team. During that whole week of tryouts, I am practically in house arrest. I think this is when my sister really teaches me that no one is perfect and she shows me how to use my strongest strength.

An Attempted Robbery
One evening when the sun was about to set, my mother asked me to go and buy some onions and salt from the nearby sundry shop. The shop is run by Samy, a jovial middle-age Indian man with a huge pot-belly. His wife and two young children, a boy and a girl, help him run the shop. It was almost completely dark when I reached the shop. Samy had switched on the lights in his small but adequately stocked shop. He was alone at the time and I was the only customer. Samy greeted me with a huge smile. I always wanted to ask him how he kept his teeth so sparkling white but I was afraid to ask. Anyway I told him what I wanted to buy and he went about getting the things for me. Next door to Samyââ¬â¢s shop is a coffee shop run by another Indian man. It was still open at the time. From the coffee shop emerged two men. They came into Samyââ¬â¢s shop and I could smell the overpowering smell of beer coming from these two men. Both of them were young but from the way they half-walked half-staggered into the shop it was obvious they had a bit too much to drink. I kept a safe distance from these men. It is never a good idea to be near drunks. One never knows what they will do next. True enough, my caution was justified, for the next moment, without any warning, one of the men swept a pile of tinned goods from a table onto the floor. In a second the neat rows were reduced to utter chaos. The man who did it roared out in laughter. I could see Samyââ¬â¢s anger rising. He raised his voice. As if in reply to his retort, the two men started shouting obscenities at him. Then suddenly a knife appeared in one of the menââ¬â¢s hand. The man that held the knife was small and wiry and judging from the muscles in his hand I had no doubt he was very strong. The knife-man lunged and in a flash he had the point of his knife at Samyââ¬â¢s throat. Samy froze and his face paled. I was so overwhelmed by the suddenness of events that the next thing I knew I could not move my hands, nor the other parts of my body. I was held in a vice-like grip by the other man. I did not even see him coming. I struggled but all I could do was to make the grip tighten more. I got difficult to breathe. I heard a lot of shouting and I could see the knife-man slapping Samy. Reluctantly Samy opened the drawer where he kept his cash and the knife-man leaned over and made a grab for the cash. That was a big mistake he made. For a fleeting moment his knife was forgotten and in that short moment Samy seized his chance. Samyââ¬â¢s huge right hand came down hard over the back of the leaning manââ¬â¢s head. The force of the blow carried the manââ¬â¢s head right down hard onto the table. There was a sickening thud when face met table. The knife-manââ¬â¢s head rebounded like a rubber ball from the table and I could see blood all over his face. He was badly hurt. The knife dropped from lifeless hands on the floor. Moving with surprising speed, Samy grabbed a bottle of tomato ketchup from a shelf and broke it over the manââ¬â¢s head. Red tomato ketchup splattered all over the place. I could not distinguish how much of the red stuff on the manââ¬â¢s face was his own blood, or tomato ketchup. Slowly he sank to the floor and lay still. I struggled to get loose. I felt so easy. Then I realized that hands no longer held me. I turned around and saw the dark figure of a man running out of the shop and disappearing into the semi-darkness. I was about to go in pursuit but Samy stopped me. He said it was useless pursuing somebody in the dark. Moreover the man could be armed and that would be dangerous. Ten minutes later the shop was filled with curious people all wanting to know what had happened. The knife-man was herded into a police car. Samy and I had to give our statements to the police. When I arrived home half an hour later, my mother was waiting impatiently for me. She was about to lecture me about being so slow in getting a few things but she stopped and listened dumbfounded while I related the recent events to her. When I finished she smiled and said that she was glad I was not injured.

George, Lennie, and Candy In Of Mice and Men - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 598 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/05/31 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Of Mice And Men Essay Did you like this example? We all have that burden desire to get what we want. As we go from time to time our perception differs. The American Dream is what we all want. What we all hope for. George, Lennie, and Candyrs dream all differed, but were also similar in different ways. George, Lennie, and Candy put everything they have got into finding a home for themselves. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck establishes the American Dream through George, Lennie, and Candy. George developed Candy and Lenniers dream by going off of his. George started the dream for them and he wanted to be his own boss and have money. This was his way of being by himself and he wanted to be the one in charge. well have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens (pg.14). This quote shows that George wants to be a boss. He seems to not mind being in change. He likes the fact that Lennie keeps adding onto his dream. The other men make Georgers dream seem even more realistic. My next quote that I found was The hell with the rabbits. Thats all you can ever remember is them rabbits. (pg. 18-19). I think this shows that Georgers dream is different from others and that he doesnt care about the bunnies and other animals. He cares about being his boss and the house. George just wanted his life and wanted to be in control. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "George, Lennie, and Candy In Of Mice and Men" essay for you Create order Lennie was a big guy. He was warmed on the inside even if he didnt seem like it. Lennie wanted to tend the rabbits, but most of all he wants hope and comfort in all this. An live on the fatta lan (pg. 105). This was a quote that I found that I feel supported Lenniers character. This shows that Lennie has hope. He wants the farm. His childlike mind plays a role on what he wants. My last quote was No you tell it. It aint the same if I tell it. Go on George. How I get to tend the rabbits.(pg. 119-123). This shows that Lennie only really cares about tending the rabbits and all he does is want to make George happy. He likes the idea of the dream, and he wants the soft things to make him happy. Candy was the last to be added to the dream. Candyrs dream deferred. He wanted the place to talk to people. A quote that I had found was spose I went in with you guys. Thats 300 and 50 bucks Id put in. (pg.59). This shows that Candy was willing to do anything to talk to people and be a part of this dream that they had come up with. Another quote I found was Lennie watched him with wide eyes, and old Candy watched him too. (pg. 202-203). This shows how bad Candy wanted the place. He wants to not be alone anymore, and he wants to help and have some people to talk to. Candy was a good guy and wanted to be a part of something special. In the story the perception of the American Dream differs throughout each character. They go through hardships and different points in their life where they feel like they could have done something differently. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck establishes the American Dream through George, Lennie, and Candy. It is clear that the American Dream differs from each person. In this story George, Lennie, and Candyrs dream were different. Even thought, each person, and each contribution affected The American Dream that they had built.
